Drop Down Sport Fish Charters Fishing Report for St. Augustine Florida - 12/25/2017

 Bait: Ballyhoo

Water temp: 65 degrees

Water depth: 150-500

What's biting: Wahoo and tuna fish

Merry Christmas everyone from Drop Down Sport Fish Charters here in St.Augustine Florida. Hope everyone had a good year in 2017. Offshore fishing charters have been pretty decent, some wahoo have been caught and a few tunafish, but nothing red hot. When I troll for wahoo deepsea, I like the morning’s and look for structure that holds bait. Blue and white lures with ballyhoo are a go to. As far as inshore fishing goes, redfish trout, black drum, and sheep heads are all biting very well. I have been catching a lot of creek fish on pop and cork floats with live shrimp drifting over oyster bars on an incoming tide.  A fiddler crab on a jig head or fishfinder rig has also been producing black drum on the bottom. Till next time hope everybody has a merry Christmas and a happy new year and  thank you for all of my clients that fished with me this year can’t wait to see everyone next year and 2018 .

Water depth: 65-100ft

What's biting: cobia, red snapper , vermilion snapper, Black Sea bass

Happy holidays from Drop Down Sport Fish Charters here in the oldest city St.Augustine Florida. Fishing offshore in December is one of my favorite months to catch some fat cobias. The brown clown will shop up this month on all the wrecks and large rock piles. Usually they will be hungry ready to eat but the 50lber might require a lil more game. Heavy spin tackle is fished most, 30-50lb line with 60lb fluorocarbon leader does the job. Have multiple rods ready because free swimmers are not uncommon. Just remember when measuring cobia it’s 33” at the fork of the tail, not the total length. Other deepsea fishing this month would include red snapper fishing since noaa opened another weekend December 8-11th. Let’s go fishing on Drop Down Sport Fish Charters! Call for reservations!!!

We can hook you up on a deep sea fishing charter of a lifetime so don’t miss your shot to go offshore fishing and catch the elusive red snapper. Also this time of year the cobia should start swimming around the wrecks in 80 to 100ft.  I like white jigs 1 to 3oz and live bait is always a plus. Free line one behind the boat in the chum line and get ready for some fish. Hope everyone has a good thanksgiving weekend and let’s go fishing on Drop Down Sport Fish Charters!!!

For those of you who didn’t know red snapper finally opened up this month for two weekends. Drop Down Sport Fish Charters here in St. Augustine Florida booked out all the snapper days but unfortunately due to the weather we only got to fish two days. Deepsea fishing for red snapper offshore on wreckes was very productive and we had our limts in just a few minutes. Most fish 5-8 pounds but a couple bigger fish near 20lbs. There are several ways to catch red snapper, personally I just like a 4 to 5 foot leader with a number eight or nine circle hook and a 8 ounce lead usually gets the job done. Drop down to the bottom and reel up about 10 cranks just off the bottom and the snappers should be there. Maybe noaa Maine fisheries well realize the seas were way too big and way too rough for anyone to go catch red snapper the weekends they choose out of it being closed for many years!!! Not really fair. Maybe they will reconsider another weekend for anglers to go catch this great tasting fish. Let’s go fishing on Drop Down Sport Fish Charters deepsea offshore.

Inshore fishing can be hot this time of year  with plenty of action. Not many people  relize, but St. Augustine Florida is a great place for backcountry fishing. We have tons of marsh creeks and a lot of water to travel. I have a lot clients that like to target redfish. When I Fish for redfish I like to use a fish finder rig with just enough lead to hold the bottom. About a foot leader and circle hook is really all you need. Deepsea fishing and offshore have been hit or miss. The ocean has been very rough and my deep sea offshore trips have been getting cancelled. Hopes the ocean lays down so we can bust out the gulfstream soon and do some trolling for sailfish and wahoo. Let’s go fishing on Drop Down Sport Fish Charters!!!
